Inhaltsangabe:
Deep Earth Academy invites educators at all levels to apply to sail on an upcoming Bering Sea expedition of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). IODP is an international marine research program that explores Earth's history and structure by drilling and recovering cores from the ocean floor and monitoring sub-seafloor environments. IODP builds upon the earlier successes of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), which revolutionized the view
of Earth history and global processes through ocean basin exploration.
IODP greatly expands the reach of these previous programs by using multiple drilling platforms, including riser, riserless, and mission-specific, to achieve its scientific objectives.
The drilling vessel supported by the United States, the JOIDES Resolution (JOIDES Resolution), has recently been refurbished and modernized and is currently undergoing sea trials in the Western Pacific Ocean. Shipboard laboratory space has been increased and upgraded, and drilling capabilities have been enhanced.
Scientific expeditions on the JOIDES Resolution will resume in March and the project in the Bering Sea is currently scheduled for 5 July - 4 September 2009. Ports of call are Honolulu, Hawaii in July and Yokohama, Japan in September.
The IODP Teacher at Sea program provides a unique opportunity for educators to participate in seagoing research experiences and work side-by-side with scientists using state-of-the-art facilities and approaches to solve scientific problems of global interest. The teachers then translate scientific results into useful classroom resources and work with Deep Earth Academy to disseminate these resources to schools across the country.
Teacher at Sea duties may include:
- Participating in the Bering Sea port call activities, including teacher workshops and presentations;
- Posting a daily web journal with pictures and/or video on the new JR web site while at sea;
- Participating in video-conferencing with live classroom and/or museum audiences while at sea;
- Managing social networking tools such as blogging, Twitter, and/or Facebook while at sea;
- Creating and sharing classroom student learning activities that relate to the expedition or conducting at least one post-expedition outreach activity such as a workshop for local teachers or a presentation at a science education conference;
- Maintaining regular communication with Deep Earth Academy during and upon completion of the cruise;
- Assisting the expedition scientists and crew in a variety of ways; AND
- Having fun!
